Daycare, Walking and Grooming for Your Dog

Puppy and dog socialisation is one of the most important things you will do with your puppy or dog, and it needs to be undertaken with a lot of care.

Gone are the days where puppies are thrown together in a room and the bold get bolder and the scared, get more frightened. Modern dog training has moved on from this type of socialisation and 'puppy party' type set ups.

This is not to say that socialisation isn't important, because it is, but it has to be done in the right way so not to cause harm to your puppy later on in life. So when it comes to doggy daycare we are very fortunate to have some highly experienced and qualified dog walkers in the area offering wonderful group walks in the beautiful Suffolk countryside.

I recommend:

Always check the dog walker or daycare has diplomas in animal care, and if they are claiming any kind of training expertise that they are force free and qualified. A good qualification will come from a recognised, college or university and will be accredited by an independant body. Dog handling qualifications are different to dog trainer and behaviourist qualifications. Good behavioural institutions are IMDT, IMDTB, ISCP, BVBA, PPG and COAPE.

Dog daycare is not right for all dogs, it would be like us being locked in a room with 10-30 people we didn't like which is why some dogs really don't do well in this set up. Don't worry, the good news is that good dog daycares will undertake a thorough assessment of all dogs attending the centre. Good dog daycares will typically spend at least 3-4 hours with your dog undertaking an assessment. Anything less than this means your dog and other dogs attending may not have been assessed accurately.

Dog Grooming

Firstly speak to groomers and work out which one seems most knowledgable about your breed of dog and grooming requirements. A well qualified groomer will be city and guilds qualified, and be able to provide you with a portfolio of their work.

If you are at all worried or feel un easy, find yourself a new groomer. After all you are leaving your precious dog in their care, so you must feel comfortable with the person grooming your dog.

Questions you should ask a groomer are:

  1. Do you groom force free?
  2. Will you reward my dog for good behaviour on the grooming table?
  3. Am I able to watch or be present?
