How long does it take to train a dog

How long does it take to train a dog?

If I had a £1 for every time I was asked how long will it take to train my dog, I would be rich! I am always intrigued when dog owners ask this question, as I could talk for hours on how and why dogs need a balance of physical and mental stimulation for the whole of their life.

The dog trainer in me says the training never ends, its lifelong and there is always something your dog can learn, practice and enjoy. I am obsessed with all things dog and I appreciate that not every doggy parent is as crazy as me, so I thought I would draw some comparisons. The average human will spend at least 14 years, (preschool to A-level),  approximately 17% of their life in some sort of education. Human education teaches us social skills, life skills, and prepares us for a future career.

So, let’s look at this with our dogs in mind. If we were to use the same formula to educate our dogs this would equate to our dogs going to school for at least 2 years of their life to do their job as your trusty K9 companion and be ready for doggy university. Sadly, the reality is that dogs rarely get this level of formal education and some none at all. So, when, anyone asks me how long does it take to train a dog, I will reply, how many years did you go to school? And do you think you have ever stopped learning? Training your dog is a journey, not an event.
