Training for overseas rescues

Overview

Lani’s owners came to classes as first time dog owners. They’ve had Lani for just 6 weeks now after rescuing her from another country. Lani has only attended a handful of classes but she’s already learnt how much of a fun place it is and loves coming to class. Her owners have been working hard to complete their homework and said that the classes have been really helpful, particularly as first time dog owners. Lani has progressed so well in such a short space of time and we can’t wait to see her future progress!

Process

Lani has been attending classes at our Blue Cross site in Ipswich. Being an outdoor venue, Lani has worked on a range of behaviours around dogs, people, wildlife and other distractions. Some of the behaviours we have covered in classes include:

General cues such as sit, down, stay.

Checking in

Loose lead walking.

Recall

Tricks that are also useful skills including paw, paws up and off an item, spin/twist.

Impulse control and switching between different behaviours.

Result

Lani has improved a range of skills that she’s been learning in class, for example, before class Lani was not able to do a ‘down’ but has quickly progressed to being able to do this behaviour with a hand signal. She’s been practising loose lead walking, recalls, stay and a range of other behaviours.

Whilst Lani has not been attending classes for very long, it’s been clear to see the relationship and bond developing between Lani and her owners since they started classes. Lani’s owners are helping her to pick up all of the desired behaviours and are setting up their future together in the best way possible.
