What is this training for?

Want to get the very best out of your dog while doing something they naturally love? Looking for a fun new activity you can enjoy together that also builds focus, confidence and teamwork?

Our 4-part Scent Detection Workshop is the perfect introduction to the exciting world of scent work.

Scent work taps into your dog’s most powerful sense — their nose. It is one of the most mentally stimulating, confidence-building and calming activities you can do with your dog. Best of all, it’s suitable for dogs of all ages and abilities, from young puppies right through to senior dogs.

During this structured workshop you’ll learn how to introduce your dog to scent detection and develop the skills needed to carry out searches in a fun and engaging way.

What you will learn

Across 4 sessions, you and your dog will learn:

• How to introduce and train your dog to recognise a target scent

• How to teach your dog to locate the scent in different environments

• How to train a clear indication when your dog finds the scent

• Scent discrimination skills

• Systematic search techniques

• Environmental and area searches

• How to support and guide your dog through a search

• How to conduct operational-style searches of spaces and objects

The course is spaced across four dates, giving you time between sessions to practise and build your dog’s skills at home.

Expert-led training

Classes are designed and delivered by Zoe Willingham, a qualified Scent Detection Instructor through the UK College of Scent Detection.

Zoe has trained and been assessed by operational scent handlers and instructors from organisations including the Metropolitan Police, elite firearms support dog units and Medical Detection Dogs. This means you and your dog will be learning techniques based on real operational scent detection methods, adapted into a fun and rewarding training experience.

Millie’s Meadow – Best Behaviour Dog School

Our beautiful 5-acre fully enclosed training field provides a safe and calm environment for dogs and handlers to learn together.

Millie’s Meadow is centrally located and within easy reach of Ipswich, Martlesham, Capel St Mary, Felixstowe, Colchester and Stowmarket, with many owners travelling further to experience our unique training programmes and purpose-built facilities.

What to bring

Please bring the following to each class:

• A flat collar or harness (choke chains and prong collars are not permitted)

• A standard lead (non-extendable)

• Lots of high-value treats, cut into small pieces (thinly sliced hot dogs work well)

• Poo bags

As training takes place outdoors, please dress for the weather so both you and your dog are comfortable. We train in all conditions — there’s no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothing!

Water and bowls are provided, but you are welcome to bring your own if your dog prefers.

We recommend reducing your dog’s meal before class, as the training is reward-based and they will receive plenty of treats during the session.
