Why puppy training is important
Just like human babies, puppies are not born knowing right from wrong. We, as pet parents, need to show them how to behave around the home, give them the confidence to explore and enjoy the big wide world safely, teach them good manners (with people, dogs and other animals) and basically, just set them off on the right paw.

There’s a lot for a new puppy to take in, and a lot for puppy parents to learn too.

After providing food, water and shelter, Puppy training, is arguably the most important thing you can do for your pet. It will certainly make your life (and your puppy’s life!) much easier in the long run. Whether you choose to take puppy to classes, work with a dog trainer on a 1-2-1 basis or subscribe to an online training course like Dogversity it’s important that your puppy training methods are just right.

Are puppy training classes open?
At the time of writing, classes will be reopening soon, and should be part of your training journey alongside the valuable online training.

As well as classes we train via weekly Facebook Live sessions and with 1-2-1 video calls. It’s working brilliantly! Nobody has to brave the winter weather, puppies, dogs and owners are learning lots of lifeskills. Dog trainer Zoe Willingham is receiving lots of positive feedback about her online puppy and dog training classes. Follow the link below to find out what people are saying.

What is the best puppy training book?
There are dozens of puppy training books available to buy or download, but my personal favourite is Easy Peasy Puppy Squeezy by Steve Mann.

Steve is the founder of the Institute of Modern Dog Trainers and his way of thinking has helped to revolutionise dog training around the world.

In Steve’s book you’ll get a real insight into the way your puppy thinks and feels and how you can best help your little one live the best life possible.

How should I start puppy training?
Puppy training should start from the moment you walk away from the breeder’s home with your new pup in your arms. By “training” I mean socialisation and helping your pup to feel confident in his or her forever home. Start BEFORE you bring puppy home, by creating a safe place for puppy to relax and sleep in. Have some suitable toys for him or her to play with and plenty of cleaning materials to cope with those inevitable toileting accidents.

Before you collect your puppy, make a point of talking to a dog trainer about toilet training, socialisation, getting puppy into a routine and making sure little one gets enough sleep. That way you’ll know what to expect and how to react to typical puppy behaviours like biting, chewing and annoying other pets.

In my blog “your new puppy, the first two weeks” I offer lots of advice on how to start puppy training. There’s also a wealth of information in the Dogversity video based puppy training course.
